3.5Years Until FIRE – A Weekend of Cleaning

NEO Shūkatsu – Living Well and Meaningfully

The series about “what my daily life looks like lately,” which I planned to upload during the pre-open period, is finally nearing its end.

Today, I want to talk about a rare weekend when I had no plans to go out, yet somehow my motivation skyrocketed.

Setting Up the Motivation the Night Before

Right after coming home from work, I realized, “Tomorrow is a rare day with no plans to go out!”

I had this unusual urge to clean the storage room and the kitchen, so I decided to prepare the night before to make it easier to get started in the morning.

I washed the dishes and removed the “mysterious objects” that had somehow been left out. I also pulled out some items from the storage room—just enough so I wouldn’t feel overwhelmed in the morning.

At this point, I praised myself with a “Well done,” then moved on to dinner and a drink.

Since my motivation weirdly continued, I went ahead and cleaned the microwave, vent hood, and toaster while doing the dishes. Good job, me.

Riding that momentum, I had another drink.

Thanks to that, even though I planned to wake up at 7 a.m. with my motivation switch fully on, I ended up waking at 10 a.m. Oops… it happens.

Starting With the Hardest Task: Cleaning the Storage Room

The moment I woke up at 10, I knew: “If I don’t start with the toughest task, I’ll regret it later.” So I headed straight to the storage room.

This time, I also included the seasonal switch—from summer gear to winter gear. First, I pulled out all the summer items.

Since I won’t be using them for half a year, I threw all the “small items” (which are not actually small… ropes, life jackets, wetsuits) into the bath and washed them all together.

Drying the SUP, Kayak, and Towable Tube Under the Sun

Next came the big items. I inflated the SUP, kayak, and towable tube outside, washed them, and left them to dry thoroughly.

While they were drying, I organized the smaller camping gear. I pushed them toward the back and brought winter gear (snowboard equipment, cold-weather fishing clothes, etc.) to the front.

Writing it out makes it sound easy, but in reality, I was sweating a lot.

Once the big items dried, I put them away in the back of the storage room.

At this point, I was pretty exhausted. I want to scold the earlier version of me who thought I’d also get around to waxing my snowboard.

The “Beer Break” Eventually Arrives

So, I cracked open a well-earned beer.

When it comes to cleaning tasks, things always take longer if you pack too much into your plan.
Even though I reflect on this every time—thinking “I can totally do all this!”—I never learn.

I wrapped up the storage room and moved on to the kitchen.

I wiped the cabinet doors, cleaned the countertop, stove, and sink more thoroughly than usual.
I’m truly glad I cleaned the vent hood last night…

I even made the fridge door shiny before calling it a day!

Ending With a Reward Steak

I had only been snacking while cleaning, so once everything was done, it was finally time for dinner and a drink.

As a reward, I grilled a steak I bought at Costco the other day.

Getting both the “annual gear switch-out day” and the kitchen deep clean done in a single day felt amazing.
Days when motivation strikes really are precious.
